A Tesla still has a small low-voltage battery that runs the locks, screens and contactors. Older Model S and Model X cars, and Model 3 and Model Y cars built up to about 2021, use a 12V lead-acid battery that Arjan Battery can test and replace at your door in Arjan or across Dubai. Both do the same job. They are different parts, at different voltages, and one cannot replace the other.
What the small battery does in an electric car
The high-voltage pack is isolated from the rest of the car until a set of heavy switches called contactors close. Those contactors, the door locks, the touchscreen and every control unit run from the low-voltage battery. A converter tops it up from the main pack while the car is awake. If the small battery cannot hold charge, the contactors never close and the car will not switch on.
A parked Tesla is not fully asleep. Features that keep watch over the car or cool the cabin wake it repeatedly, and each cycle works the low-voltage battery. Parked outdoors through a Dubai summer, a lead-acid one ages quickly. The car usually warns you on the screen well before it fails, and that warning is the moment to book a replacement, not the day the doors stop responding.

Power the front latch
On Model 3 and Model Y two leads sit behind the tow-eye cover in the front bumper. A 12V supply on them releases the frunk, which is the way in to the battery.

With the frunk open, the technician lifts the rear trim panel, connects a supply to wake the car and measures what the low-voltage battery can still do.

A 12V lead-acid battery is replaced on the spot and the old one taken for recycling. If the car has the 16V lithium unit, we say plainly what can be done.
The two battery types must never be mixed
A 12V lead-acid battery must not be fitted to a car built for 16V lithium, and a lithium unit will not work in a 12V car. The charging electronics are different. Send us the build year, or a photo of the battery under the frunk panel, and we identify the system before anyone drives to you.

- Tesla's name for the small battery that runs everything except the motors. It is 12V lead-acid or 16V lithium depending on build date.
- Contactors
- Heavy relays that connect the high-voltage pack to the car. They need low-voltage power to close.
- DC-DC converter
- The unit that charges the low-voltage battery from the main pack, doing the job an alternator does in a petrol car.
- Frunk
- The front boot. The low-voltage battery sits beneath its rear trim panel, close to the windscreen.
- Tow-eye cover leads
- Two wires behind the round bumper cover on Model 3 and Model Y, used to open the frunk when the car has no power.
Tesla: Model by model
- Tesla Model 3
- Cars built up to about 2021 use a compact 12V lead-acid battery of around 45Ah under the rear panel of the frunk. Later cars use a 16V lithium unit, so we confirm by build year.
- Tesla Model Y
- Same layout as the Model 3. The change from 12V lead-acid to 16V lithium happened around 2021 to 2022 depending on the factory, so the year alone is not always enough.
- Tesla Model S
- Before the 2021 refresh it uses a 12V sealed lead-acid battery behind the frunk trim, and on the earliest cars access takes longer. Refreshed cars use 16V lithium.
- Tesla Model X
- Follows the Model S: a 12V sealed lead-acid battery behind the frunk trim on cars before the 2021 refresh, and a 16V lithium unit after it.
- Tesla Cybertruck

Does a Tesla have a 12V battery?
Older ones do. Model S and Model X before the 2021 refresh, and Model 3 and Model Y built up to about 2021, use a 12V lead-acid battery under the frunk. Newer cars use a 16V lithium low-voltage battery instead, and Cybertruck uses a 48V system. All of them need it to unlock, wake and drive.
My Tesla says to replace the 12V battery soon. Can I keep driving?
The car normally still drives when the alert first appears, but treat it as a deadline. Once the low-voltage battery fails completely the car will not wake or unlock. Message us with the model and build year, and we arrange a 12V battery replacement at your home in Arjan or elsewhere in Dubai.
Can you jump start a Tesla?
There is no engine to crank, but a flat low-voltage system can be supported with an external 12V supply so the car wakes and the main pack connects. On Model 3 and Model Y we first open the frunk through the leads behind the tow-eye cover. A Tesla should not be used to jump start another car.
Can you replace the 16V lithium battery in a newer Model Y?

How long does a Tesla 12V battery last in Dubai?
