Why an AGM car must get AGM again

In an AGM battery the acid is soaked into glass-fibre mats pressed tight between the plates. Nothing sloshes, the case is sealed with valves, and the battery takes charge quickly and survives deep, repeated discharge far better than a flooded one. That is the job in a start-stop car: the engine restarts dozens of times a trip, and while it is stopped the battery alone runs the AC fan, lights and screens.

Cars with brake energy recovery ask for more. The alternator charges hard when you lift off or brake and hardly at all when you accelerate, so the battery is kept partly charged on purpose and absorbs big bursts of current. The charging profile in the car is written for AGM. A flooded battery put into that role sulphates quickly and is usually finished within months.

How to tell your car has an AGM battery

  • The label says AGM, VRLA or absorbent glass mat. An EFB battery says EFB.
  • The top is flat and sealed, with no filler caps to open.
  • The car has start-stop: a button marked with an A inside a circular arrow.
  • The battery sits in the boot, under the rear seat or under the passenger floor, with a small vent tube.
  • A sensor is clipped onto the negative terminal. That is the battery monitoring system.

    Technology, capacity in Ah and cranking amps are noted from the label so the new battery matches what the car expects.

    Code if something changed

    If capacity or technology differs from the original, such as an EFB to AGM upgrade, the new values are coded so charging matches the battery.

    Verify

A flooded battery in an AGM car does not last

Can I replace an AGM battery with a normal battery?

No. A car designed around AGM cycles its battery far harder than an ordinary car and charges it on an AGM profile. A flooded battery in that position loses capacity quickly, start-stop stops working, and you end up buying a second battery. An AGM car gets AGM again.

Can I upgrade from EFB to AGM?

In most cars, yes. AGM copes better with repeated discharge, so it suits a start-stop car that does short city trips. We keep the same case size and a similar capacity, and code the change on cars with battery monitoring. Staying with EFB is also a sound choice where the maker fitted it.

What happens if a new AGM battery is not registered?

The car goes on treating it as the old, tired battery. It may charge it harder than a fresh battery needs, keep start-stop disabled and keep showing the battery message. None of that stops the car on day one, but it shortens the life of the battery you just paid for.

Why has my start-stop stopped working?

Most often because the battery monitor has decided the battery is too low or too worn to be sure of a restart, so it keeps the engine running. Very hot days with the AC working hard can pause it too. A battery test shows which one it is.

How long does an AGM battery replacement take?
