The short answer
Most BMW models carry an AGM battery of about 70 to 105Ah in the boot, and the car has to be told when a new one is fitted. Arjan Battery brings the matching AGM battery to your car in Arjan or anywhere in Dubai, fits it in your parking bay and registers it with a scan tool so the charging system treats it as new.
A BMW battery change has two halves. The mechanical half is lifting the boot floor, undoing the bracket and swapping a heavy AGM battery. The electronic half is registration, where a scan tool resets the battery history stored in the car. Skip the second half and the new battery starts its life being charged like the old one. We do both at your car.

Battery brands we recommend for BMW
We carry brands that car makers fit at the factory and that hold up in Gulf heat. Each one has its strengths, and we will tell you which suits your car.
VartaThe German battery many European cars leave the factory with, in standard, EFB and AGM form.
BoschA German parts name with a battery range you can read by its code: S4, S5, S4 E and S5 A.
ExideOne of the oldest names in car batteries, now made by two separate companies. The label tells you which.
DuracellThe copper-top name on a car battery built by licensed manufacturers, with a full start-stop range.
The five parts of a BMW battery change
This is the sequence the technician follows in your parking bay, in a tower basement in Arjan as much as on a villa driveway.
- 1
Test from the bonnet posts
Battery health and alternator output are measured first, using the jump posts in the engine bay. If the battery is fine, nothing is replaced.
- 2
Open the boot floor
On most BMW models the battery is under the boot floor or behind the right-hand trim. Panels and the hold-down bracket come out first.
- 3
Match type and capacity
AGM replaces AGM, at the amp-hour rating the car was built with, usually between 70 and 105Ah. A memory saver holds settings where the car allows it.
- 4
Refit vent hose and sensor
The vent hose goes back on, the battery sensor lead on the negative terminal is reconnected without strain, and the bracket is tightened.
- 5
Register the battery
A scan tool tells the car a new battery is installed. If the capacity or type has changed, that is coded as well, and charging is checked again.

What registration does, and what happens without it
From about 2002 BMW has fitted an intelligent battery sensor, the IBS, on the negative terminal. It measures current, voltage and temperature, and the car's power management uses that history to decide how hard to charge. As the battery ages, the car charges it differently and begins switching off comfort loads to protect starting power.
A new battery fitted without registration is still treated as the old one. The car may overcharge it, keep start-stop disabled, or carry on showing an 'Increased battery discharge' message. Registration resets the stored history. It takes a few minutes with a scan tool, and we do it at the car when we fit a BMW battery in Arjan or anywhere else in Dubai.
Warnings a BMW gives before the battery fails
- An 'Increased battery discharge while stationary' message on the screen after the car has been parked.
- The clock and date reset themselves after a night in the car park.
- Auto start-stop no longer switches the engine off at traffic lights, although nothing else seems wrong.
- The car turns off the interior fan, seat functions or rear demister sooner than it used to.
- A slow crank on the first start, with a red battery symbol that clears once the engine is running.
Jump starting a BMW with the battery in the boot
You do not need to empty the boot. BMW puts a positive jump post under a red cap in the engine bay, with an earth point nearby, and our technician connects there. After any jump start we test the battery, because an AGM battery that has been deeply discharged often does not recover its full capacity.
BMW: Model by model
- BMW 3 Series
- The battery is in the boot, on the right-hand side on most generations. Start-stop cars take an AGM battery of about 80 to 90Ah, and registration is needed after fitting.
- BMW 5 Series
- A boot-mounted AGM battery, usually 90 to 105Ah depending on engine and options. The capacity has to match what is coded in the car, or be recoded.
- BMW 7 Series
- The largest BMW battery, usually a 105Ah-class AGM in the boot. Some versions carry a second battery, so we check by VIN before setting off.
- BMW X5
- The AGM battery, usually 90 to 105Ah, sits under the boot floor. Floor panels and the bracket come out first, which makes this one of the longer BMW swaps.
- BMW X3
- An AGM battery of about 80 to 90Ah under the boot floor. Like every recent BMW, it needs registration so the charging system resets its history.
- BMW X1
- Usually an AGM battery of about 70 to 80Ah in the boot floor. Layout changed between generations, so a year or VIN lets us confirm before we come.
- BMW X6
- Shares its electrical layout with the X5: a large AGM battery under the boot floor, usually 90 to 105Ah, with jump posts under the bonnet.
- BMW X7
- A large AGM 12V battery at the rear, plus a separate 48V mild-hybrid system on many engines. We replace and register the 12V battery only.
- BMW 1 Series
- The smallest BMW battery, usually an AGM of about 70 to 80Ah in the boot. Short city trips keep it undercharged, and the car answers by switching start-stop off.

BMW: common questions
Not answered here? Ask on WhatsApp. A person replies, at any hour.
Do I have to register a new battery on a BMW?
Yes, on any BMW with a battery sensor, which covers most cars from about 2002 onwards. Registration tells the power management system that the battery is new. Without it the car keeps charging to the old battery's profile, which shortens the new battery's life. We register it on site with a scan tool.
Where is the battery in a BMW X5?
In the boot, under the floor. On most X5 generations you lift the floor panel and a cover to reach it, and the bracket has to come out before the battery will move. The jump start posts are under the bonnet, so a flat car can be started or tested without unloading the boot.
Can I fit a standard battery in a BMW that came with AGM?
No. A BMW built with AGM charges at a profile meant for AGM, and start-stop with brake energy recovery cycles the battery far harder than a flooded type can take. The battery also sits inside the car, where a sealed AGM is the correct choice. AGM battery replacement is the only proper option.
What Ah battery does a BMW 5 Series need?
Most 5 Series models take an AGM battery of 90 or 105Ah, depending on engine and equipment. The right figure is the one printed on the fitted battery, or coded in the car. If a different capacity is fitted, the car must be coded to match during registration.
Why does my BMW say increased battery discharge?
The car measured more drain than expected while parked, or the battery can no longer hold enough charge. An ageing battery is the usual cause in Dubai heat. Something left awake, such as a hard-wired dashcam, can also trigger it. Battery testing shows whether the battery itself is finished.
