The short answer

A BYD has two batteries: the large traction battery that drives the car, and a small 12V battery that runs the locks, screens and contactors. On many newer BYDs the 12V unit is a compact lithium battery; on others it is conventional lead-acid. The usual BYD call goes like this: the car showed 80 percent last night and this morning it will not unlock. The big battery is fine. The small one is not. Two batteries, and the small one decides

The traction battery under the floor stores the energy that moves the car. It is isolated by heavy switches called contactors whenever the car is off. The 12V battery is what powers the computers that close those contactors. If the 12V side is flat, nothing wakes up, and the charge in the big battery cannot be reached.

All our work on a BYD is on the 12V side. We do not open or disconnect the orange high-voltage cables. The technician measures the 12V battery, boosts it through the low-voltage terminals, and once the car is in ready mode checks that the DC-DC converter is charging it. If the 12V unit is lead-acid, it can be replaced there and then.

BYD low-voltage terms

Traction battery: The high-voltage pack under the floor, which BYD calls the Blade Battery. It drives the motors. We do not service it.
12V auxiliary battery: The small battery that runs locks, lights, screens and control units. This is the one behind most no-start calls.
LFP: Lithium iron phosphate. The chemistry of BYD's traction pack and, on many newer cars, of the 12V unit as well.
DC-DC converter: Does the job of an alternator. It steps high voltage down to charge the 12V battery, but only while the car is awake.
Ready mode: The state shown on the dash when the contactors are closed and the car can drive. A flat 12V battery stops the car reaching it.

Never fit a lead-acid battery in place of the lithium unit

The car's charging voltage and the unit's own protection circuit are matched to each other. An ordinary lead-acid battery wired into that position is charged the wrong way and has no place to be clamped. If your BYD has the lithium 12V unit and it has failed, the correct part is a BYD one, and we will say so.

Signs the 12V side is the problem

The car does not respond to the key, the card or the phone app, though the main battery was well charged.
The screens stay dark or flicker, and the dash never shows that the car is ready to drive.
A low-voltage or power system warning appeared in the days before the car stopped waking up.
The car was parked for several weeks, for example during the summer holidays, with a dashcam or tracker connected.
The charging cable will not release from the port because the lock has no power to open.

BYD: Model by model

BYD Atto 3: Electric SUV. Most cars carry a small 12V lithium unit under the bonnet in place of a lead-acid battery. We test and boost it there, and check which part is fitted before promising a replacement.
BYD Seal: Electric saloon with a 12V lithium auxiliary battery on most cars. When it runs low the doors may not unlock and the car will not switch to ready, even with a full main battery.
BYD Han: Sold as an EV and as a plug-in hybrid. Most use the lithium 12V unit, but fitment differs by year and market, so we ask for a photo of the part under the bonnet first.
BYD Song Plus: Mostly seen as the DM-i plug-in hybrid. The 12V battery wakes the electronics and the hybrid system does the rest, so a weak one shows as a car that will not switch on at all.
BYD Qin Plus: Plug-in hybrid saloon with the same low-voltage layout as the Song Plus. Cars driven daily rarely have 12V trouble; cars left parked for weeks are the ones we get called to.
BYD Sealion 7: Electric SUV related to the Seal, with a lithium 12V unit on most cars. Powered tailgate, cameras and app connectivity all depend on that small battery when the car is parked.
BYD Shark 6: Plug-in hybrid pickup. Light bars, fridges and winches are usually wired to the 12V side, so tell us what has been added before we test for a drain.

Does a BYD electric car have a normal car battery?

It has a 12V battery, but not always a normal one. Many newer BYDs use a compact 12V lithium unit made for the car, and others use a conventional lead-acid or AGM battery in a standard case. A photo of the part under the bonnet tells us which you have.

Can you jump start a BYD that will not turn on?

Yes. Our jump start service connects a booster to the 12V terminals only, which wakes the computers and lets the car switch to ready. From there the car recharges its own 12V battery. We then test it to see whether it is holding charge.

Can you replace the 12V battery on a BYD Atto 3 or Seal?

If the car has a lead-acid 12V battery, yes, at your door. If it has the lithium unit, we test it, recover the car and tell you honestly that the replacement is a BYD part. Send a photo first and we confirm on WhatsApp before anyone travels.

Why did my BYD go flat while it was parked?

The 12V battery is only charged while the car is awake. Parked, it still feeds the alarm, the telematics unit and anything added later, such as a dashcam. After a few weeks that can empty it. Driving or waking the car every week or two usually prevents this.
