The short answer
Flooded and sealed maintenance-free batteries suit ordinary cars without start-stop. EFB is a strengthened flooded battery for entry-level start-stop cars. An AGM battery is sealed, holds its acid in glass mats and suits start-stop with brake energy recovery, and a car built with AGM must get AGM again. Arjan Battery supplies and fits all three types at your door in Arjan, Dubai.

Three lead-acid designs and one outsider
Flooded, EFB and AGM are all 12V lead-acid batteries with lead plates and sulphuric acid. The difference lies in how the acid is held and how the plates are built. A flooded battery has its plates standing in liquid acid. Most sold in the UAE today are sealed maintenance-free calcium types, often labelled SMF, with no caps to top up.
An EFB, or enhanced flooded battery, keeps the liquid acid but adds a polyester scrim on the plates and stronger grids, so it takes many more engine starts. An AGM battery soaks the acid into glass fibre mats pressed tightly between the plates. It is sealed and spill-proof, accepts charge faster and tolerates deeper, more frequent cycling.
Lithium low-voltage batteries are a separate group. Newer Teslas use a 16V lithium pack in place of the 12V lead-acid battery, and a few performance cars carry a 12V lithium starter battery to save weight. These do not interchange with lead-acid. The car's charging system and the battery's own electronics are matched, so the replacement is the maker's unit.

Why you cannot downgrade
A car with start-stop restarts its engine dozens of times on one trip through Dubai traffic, and runs the AC fan, lights and screens from the battery while the engine is off. Cars with brake energy recovery also push short, heavy bursts of charge into the battery each time you lift off. A plain flooded battery is built for neither.
Fit a flooded battery in an AGM car and it usually works for some weeks or months. Then start-stop drops out, warning messages appear and the battery fails early, because the car charges it as if it were a different type. AGM in place of EFB is a sound upgrade. EFB or flooded in place of AGM is not.
Which cars usually need which
- Japanese and Korean cars without start-stop
- Flooded or SMF calcium in JIS sizes such as NS60, 55D23L or 80D26L
- Entry-level start-stop cars
- EFB as a minimum
- BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche with start-stop
- Usually AGM in DIN sizes such as H7 or H8, often in the boot
- Land Rover, Range Rover, Volvo
- Usually AGM, sometimes with a second auxiliary battery
- Hybrids and EVs
- A 12V low-voltage battery, or a 16V lithium pack in newer Teslas
This varies by model year and trim. We check the fitted battery, the VIN or the registration card before setting off.
How to tell what your car has now
Read the label on the fitted battery. It will say AGM or EFB, or carry neither marking on a flooded type. A start-stop button on the dash means the car needs EFB or AGM. If a previous owner fitted the wrong type, the VIN tells us what the factory installed, so send a photo of the label or the registration card on WhatsApp.
Choosing the right battery in practice
- Replace like for like as a minimum: flooded with flooded, EFB with EFB or AGM, AGM with AGM.
- Match the size standard, whether JIS, DIN or BCI group, with the positive terminal on the correct side.
- Match or exceed the Ah and CCA on the original label, within what the tray and clamp accept.
- Register the new battery on cars with a battery sensor, above all when the capacity or type changes.
- Reconnect the vent tube on any battery mounted in the boot or under a seat.
The labels decoded
- AGM
- Absorbent glass mat. Sealed lead-acid with the acid held in glass fibre mats.
- EFB
- Enhanced flooded battery. Liquid acid with reinforced plates for basic start-stop.
- SMF
- Sealed maintenance-free. A flooded calcium battery that never needs topping up.
- Brake energy recovery
- The car charges the battery hardest while slowing down, which calls for fast charge acceptance.
- Low-voltage battery
- The 12V or 16V battery in an EV or hybrid that runs locks, screens and contactors.
AGM vs EFB vs Flooded Car Batteries Explained: common questions
Not answered here? Ask on WhatsApp. A person replies, at any hour.
Can I put a normal battery in a start-stop car?
No. A normal flooded battery is not built for the repeated restarts and partial charge of a start-stop car. It will run for a while, then start-stop switches off and the battery fails early. Fit EFB or AGM, whichever the car left the factory with, or AGM as an upgrade from EFB.
Can I upgrade from EFB to an AGM battery?
Yes, in most cars. AGM handles deeper cycling and accepts charge faster, so it suits an EFB car that sees heavy traffic and many short trips. The case size and terminals must match, and on a car with a battery sensor the change of type should be coded with a scan tool.
Is an AGM battery better for the heat in Dubai?
It is sealed, so it does not lose water through vents the way a flooded battery can, and it resists vibration well. Heat still ages every lead-acid battery. For an ordinary car without start-stop, a good SMF battery of the correct size remains a sensible choice.
Do electric cars and hybrids have a normal car battery?
Yes. Alongside the high-voltage drive battery there is a low-voltage battery, 12V in most cars and 16V lithium in newer Teslas. It powers the locks, screens and the contactors that connect the main pack, so when it goes flat the car will not wake up.
How do I know if my battery is AGM or EFB?
The type is printed on the battery label, usually in large letters. If the battery sits under boot trim or a seat and you cannot see it, send the make, model and year or a photo of the registration card on WhatsApp and we will confirm the type before the technician leaves.
