Three generations, three kinds of battery job
The classic Defender, the first two Discovery models and the original Freelander are simple. One flooded battery, two clamps, nothing to tell the car afterwards. The work is mostly about access and about cleaning up terminals that have seen years of heat and, on cars that go to the desert, sand.
The LR3, LR4 and LR2 are the middle generation. The battery is a large H7 or H8 class, housed in a lidded box at the back of the engine bay. Air suspension, terrain response and many control units all depend on steady voltage, so a tired battery shows up as a dashboard full of unrelated warnings.
The current Defender, Discovery 5 and Discovery Sport add stop-start, AGM batteries and a battery monitoring system. Many carry an auxiliary battery as well. On these the new battery is fitted, the monitoring system is reset with a scan tool, and both batteries are tested so the right one is replaced.
What wears out Land Rover batteries in Dubai
Standing unused
Many are weekend or desert cars. Two or three weeks in a basement can drop an ageing battery below starting voltage.
Low-voltage faults
A weak battery can light suspension, gearbox and hill descent warnings together. Test the battery before chasing each fault separately.

- The classic Defender keeps a simple battery in the seat box under a front seat. The current Defender uses a large AGM battery with monitoring, and some engines add a second battery, so we confirm by VIN.
- Land Rover Discovery 5
- A large AGM main battery under the bonnet, managed by a battery monitoring system that should be reset after replacement. Many versions also have a smaller auxiliary battery.
- Land Rover Discovery Sport
- Usually an AGM battery of about 80Ah under the bonnet, with a small auxiliary battery on stop-start versions. Mild-hybrid engines add a separate 48V system that we leave alone.
- Land Rover LR4
- The Gulf name for the Discovery 4. A 90 to 95Ah-class main battery sits in a covered box under the bonnet, and later stop-start cars add an auxiliary battery in the opposite corner.
- Land Rover LR3
- The Gulf name for the Discovery 3. One large battery of about 90Ah under the bonnet. A weak battery on this car often sets off suspension and gearbox warnings before it fails to start.
- Land Rover LR2
- Sold elsewhere as the Freelander 2. An H7-class battery of about 80Ah under the bonnet, AGM on the later versions that have stop-start.

Where is the battery on a Land Rover Defender?
On the classic Defender it is inside the seat box, under one of the front seats, reached by lifting the seat base. The current Defender is different and uses a large AGM battery with electronic monitoring. Why does my LR4 show so many warning lights with a weak battery?
The LR4 runs many control units that each check their supply voltage at start-up. When the battery sags during cranking, several of them log a fault at once, so suspension, gearbox and hill descent warnings appear together. Battery testing comes first. Often the warnings clear once a healthy battery is fitted.
Does a Land Rover battery need a BMS reset?
On recent models with a battery monitoring system it is recommended, and we do it with a scan tool after fitting. It lets the car charge the new battery properly and bring stop-start back. Older cars such as the classic Defender, Discovery 1 and 2 and the first Freelander need no reset at all.
My Discovery has two batteries. Which one is flat?
The main battery starts the engine. The auxiliary one supports the electronics during stop-start restarts. If the car will not crank, suspect the main battery. If it starts but stop-start is unavailable and a battery warning shows, suspect the auxiliary. We test both on site, so you replace only the one that failed.
