A MINI is electrically a small BMW. Most take an AGM battery of about 60 to 80Ah in a DIN case: in the boot on the Countryman, Paceman, later Clubman and early Cooper S, and under a cover at the back of the engine bay on most hatch models. Battery registration, step by step
This is the part that separates a proper MINI battery job from a quick swap.

Read the car
The scan tool reads the battery data stored in the car: capacity, type and the distance at the last registration.

Fit the matching battery
Same capacity and same technology as stored. The sensor on the negative terminal is handled gently; it is easily damaged.

Register the change
The car is told a new battery is fitted. It clears the ageing data and returns to the charging strategy for a fresh battery.

Check the result
Charging voltage is measured with the engine running, stored low-voltage faults are cleared, and the clock and windows are reset.
Changing type or capacity needs coding as well
Registration tells the car the battery is new. It does not tell the car the battery is different. If a flooded battery is replaced with AGM, or a 70Ah with an 80Ah, the stored battery type has to be recoded too. The simple route is the one we take by default: the same capacity and technology the car already expects.
Why city MINIs wear batteries quickly
A MINI in Arjan typically does a few kilometres at a time: Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai Hills Estate, back to the tower. Auto start-stop restarts the engine at every junction on Hessa Street, and the alternator is managed to charge mostly when you lift off the accelerator. On short urban trips that leaves the battery working below full charge for weeks.
The car notices before you do. It disables auto start-stop first, then may log an increased battery discharge message when parked. Those are the moments to book battery testing. Measured early, a battery can often be recovered with a proper charge. Left until the car will not unlock, it usually cannot.
Terms you will hear on a MINI battery job
- IBS
- Intelligent battery sensor. The small module on the negative terminal that measures current, voltage and temperature for the car.
- Registration
- Telling the car through a scan tool that a new battery of the same specification has been fitted.
- Coding
- Changing the stored battery capacity or type. Only needed when the new battery differs from the original.
- Auto start-stop
- Shuts the engine off when stationary. It is the first function the car withdraws when the battery charge is low.
- H5 and H6
- DIN case sizes. H6 is longer than H5, and each MINI tray is made for one of them.
MINI: Model by model
- MINI Cooper
- On hatch generations from 2007 on, the battery is at the rear of the engine bay under a plastic cover. First-generation Cooper S cars carry it in the boot. AGM and registration apply to start-stop cars.
- MINI Countryman
- Boot-mounted on both generations, under the luggage floor, with jump-start posts under the bonnet. Most take an AGM of about 70 to 80Ah, and registration is required.
- MINI Clubman
- The first Clubman follows the hatch, with the battery in the engine bay. From 2015 the larger Clubman moved it under the boot floor. We ask the year before loading the van.
- MINI Hatch
- Three-door and five-door cars take an H5 or H6 DIN battery of about 60 to 70Ah under the cover near the windscreen. Lifting that cover without breaking its clips is half the job.
- MINI Convertible
- Follows the hatch of the same generation for battery location. The electric roof is a heavy load, and a roof that slows or stops part way is an early sign of a tired battery.
- MINI Paceman
- Shares its platform with the first Countryman, so the battery is under the boot floor. AGM on start-stop cars, with the same registration step.
- MINI One
- The entry hatch takes the smaller case, around 60Ah. It is registered the same way as a Cooper, and it needs AGM if the car has auto start-stop.

Where is the battery in a MINI Cooper?
On most hatch models from 2007 on, it is at the rear of the engine bay under a plastic cover near the windscreen. On first-generation Cooper S cars, and on the Countryman and later Clubman, it is under the boot floor. We confirm by year before coming.
Does a MINI battery need to be registered like a BMW?
Yes. MINIs with the battery sensor use the same procedure as BMW. Without registration the car keeps charging as if the old battery were still fitted, which shortens the life of the new one. We register every MINI battery we fit, using a scan tool on site.
Does my MINI need an AGM battery?
If the car has auto start-stop or left the factory with AGM, yes. An AGM car must get AGM again. Older MINIs without start-stop were built with a flooded battery and can stay with that type, or move to AGM with the battery type recoded.
Can you replace the 12V battery on an electric MINI?
