The short answer
Recent Jeeps with start-stop carry two batteries: a main AGM of about 70 to 80Ah and a small auxiliary AGM. On the Wrangler both are under the bonnet; on the Grand Cherokee they sit under a front seat. Arjan Battery tests both, replaces what has failed at your door in Arjan or anywhere in Dubai, and clears the stored faults.
Jeep owners get caught by the same surprise. The main battery was replaced last year, it tests fine, and the car still shows a stop-start warning or will not crank. The cause is usually the second battery, a small unit tucked out of sight that most people never knew they had. This page explains both batteries and where Jeep puts them.

Why a Jeep can refuse to start on a good main battery
On a start-stop Jeep the auxiliary battery keeps the electronics alive while the engine restarts at a signal. The two batteries are also linked while the car is parked. So when the small one develops a weak cell, it drains the large one overnight. In the morning both read low, and the obvious conclusion is that the main battery has died.
Replace only the main battery and the fault returns within weeks, because the bad auxiliary is still there pulling it down. This is the most common repeat problem we see on the current Wrangler, Gladiator and start-stop Grand Cherokee. The fix is simple once you know: separate the two batteries, test each alone and replace what fails.
Main battery and auxiliary battery compared
Main battery
- A full-size AGM, group 48 or 94R on most models, that cranks the engine on every key start.
- Easy to see on a Wrangler, hidden under a front seat on a Grand Cherokee.
- Fails with the classic signs: slow cranking, dim lights, a click and nothing more.
Auxiliary battery
- A small AGM, roughly the size of a motorcycle battery, that supports the electronics during automatic restarts.
- Mounted out of sight: low beside the main battery on a Wrangler, beside it under the seat on a Grand Cherokee.
- Fails quietly: a stop-start warning light, then a main battery that keeps going flat for no clear reason.
Grand Cherokee: jump from the bonnet, not the seat
The Grand Cherokee has dedicated jump start posts under the bonnet, a positive terminal under a red cap and an earth stud. Use those. Do not lift the seat cover and clamp onto the battery inside the cabin, where a spark sits next to carpet, wiring and the battery vent.
Jeep battery words
- ESS
- Engine stop-start. Jeep's name for the system that shuts the engine off at a standstill.
- Auxiliary battery
- The small second 12V battery fitted to ESS models. It is a wear item, like the main one.
- IBS
- Intelligent battery sensor. A module on the negative terminal that reports charge and current to the car.
- Group 48 and 94R
- American BCI case sizes, the same as European H6 and H7. The label on your battery shows which one you have.
How we sort out a two-battery Jeep
- 1
Hear the symptoms
Tell us the model, the year and what the dash says. A stop-start warning with normal cranking points one way, a dead car another.
- 2
Isolate and test both
The batteries are disconnected from each other and tested one at a time. Tested together, a good one hides a bad one.
- 3
Replace what failed
Main, auxiliary or both, in AGM. If both are the same age and one has failed, changing both saves a second visit.
- 4
Check charging and clear faults
Alternator output is measured, stored stop-start faults are cleared with a scan tool, and the old batteries go for recycling.
Jeep: Model by model
- Jeep Wrangler
- The current Wrangler has a main AGM under the bonnet and a small auxiliary battery mounted low beside it, under the fuse box. The earlier generation has one battery. Reaching the auxiliary means lifting out the main battery and its tray.
- Jeep Grand Cherokee
- On the generation sold through the 2010s the battery is under the front passenger seat, with jump posts under the bonnet. Start-stop versions add an auxiliary battery beside it. Newer cars keep the under-seat layout; we confirm the side.
- Jeep Grand Cherokee L
- The three-row model follows the current Grand Cherokee: AGM batteries under a front seat and jump terminals in the engine bay. The seat is moved fully and a floor cover lifted to reach them.
- Jeep Cherokee
- Battery under the bonnet. V6 and later four-cylinder cars with start-stop use an AGM main battery and a small auxiliary one mounted separately. Older Cherokees have a single conventional battery.
- Jeep Compass
- The current Compass takes a DIN-pattern battery of about 60 to 70Ah under the bonnet, AGM on start-stop versions. Whether a second battery is fitted depends on engine and year.
- Jeep Renegade
- Built on a Fiat platform, so its battery follows European DIN sizing, around 60Ah. Start-stop versions need AGM or EFB as originally fitted.
- Jeep Gladiator
- The pickup shares the Wrangler's front end and its two-battery layout. Owners who add a winch or camp fridge should have both batteries tested before a long desert trip.

Jeep: common questions
Not answered here? Ask on WhatsApp. A person replies, at any hour.
Does a Jeep Wrangler have two batteries?
The current generation with stop-start does: a main AGM battery under the bonnet and a small auxiliary battery mounted low beside it. The previous generation has a single battery. If you are unsure which you have, send the year and we will tell you before we come.
Where is the battery on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?
Under a front seat, beneath a floor cover, on Grand Cherokees from about 2011 onward. On the generation sold through the 2010s it is the front passenger seat. Jump start posts are under the bonnet. Earlier Grand Cherokees have the battery in the engine bay.
What does Stop/Start Not Ready Battery Charging mean on my Jeep?
The car is saying battery charge is too low to allow automatic engine stops. After a short trip that can be normal. If it shows on every drive, one of the two batteries is usually failing, most often the auxiliary. A test of each battery separately gives the answer.
Should both Jeep batteries be replaced at the same time?
Not always. We test each one alone and replace only what fails. When both are original and one has gone, the other is usually close behind in Dubai heat, so many owners choose to do both. We show you the readings and you decide.
Will a winch or light bar kill my Wrangler battery?
Used with the engine running and wired properly, no. Problems come from winching with the engine off, or accessories wired to stay live when parked. If the battery keeps going flat after a desert trip, we can test it and measure the standby drain at your home.
