The short answer
A Mazda takes a JIS-size 12V battery under the bonnet. Cars with i-stop need the Q-85 type, an EFB built for idling stop, while trims without i-stop use an ordinary battery such as 55D23L. Arjan Battery checks which one your Mazda has, fits it at your door in Arjan or elsewhere in Dubai, and resets the i-stop system afterwards.
Mazda batteries confuse people because the label on an i-stop car reads Q-85 or S-95, codes many drivers have never seen. Fit the wrong type and the car still starts, but the i-stop light flashes amber and the battery wears out early. This page explains the codes and what each popular Mazda takes.

Mazda battery words, decoded
- i-stop
- Mazda's start-stop system. It shuts the engine down at a standstill and restarts it when you lift off the brake, which means many more starts per trip than a normal car.
- i-ELOOP
- Brake energy recovery that stores electricity in a capacitor, then feeds it to the car's electrical loads. The 12V battery is still there and still has to be the idling-stop type.
- Q-85
- A Japanese idling-stop battery code. Q is the case size, the same footprint as a D23, and 85 is a performance rank. It is an EFB, not an AGM.
- S-95
- The next size up, in a D26 case, used on some larger and diesel Mazdas. It will not fit a tray made for a Q-85.
- Current sensor
- A small module on the negative terminal that measures charge flowing in and out. The car uses its running total to decide when i-stop is allowed.
What this means for a Mazda in Dubai
Not every Mazda sold in the Gulf has i-stop. Two CX-5s of the same year can leave the showroom with different batteries, one a Q-85 and one a plain 75D23L. The quickest way to know is the label on the battery and the i-stop OFF button on the lower dashboard. If the button is there, the car needs the idling-stop battery.
Dubai driving is hard on these batteries. In summer the AC load keeps i-stop from engaging much of the time, yet the battery still sits in engine-bay heat and still does short runs along Hessa Street or around Motor City without a full recharge. About 2 to 3 years is a normal life here, shorter if the car is parked for weeks.
Three Mazda setups, three batteries
Mazda battery change at home, step by step
- 1
Identify the battery
You send the model, year and a photo of the label. We bring a Q-85, an S-95 or a standard JIS battery to match.
- 2
Test the old one
Resting voltage, cranking health and alternator output are measured first. A battery that only needs a charge is not replaced.
- 3
Fit and keep the sensor
The current sensor stays on the negative cable and is refitted carefully. Forcing it or leaving it loose causes charging faults later.
- 4
Reset i-stop
We reset the stored battery data with a scan tool, so the car stops judging the new battery by the old one's history.
A flashing amber i-stop light after a battery change
This is the most common Mazda complaint we hear after a battery was changed elsewhere. It rarely means the new battery is faulty. Either the battery data was never reset, or an ordinary battery went in where a Q-85 belongs. We can check which, and do the reset at your car.
Mazda: Model by model
- Mazda Mazda3
- SkyActiv cars with i-stop take a Q-85 EFB in a D23 case. Trims without i-stop usually carry a standard JIS battery in a B24 or D23 case. Some higher trims add i-ELOOP, which makes the correct battery type even more important.
- Mazda Mazda6
- Same D23 family as the Mazda3: Q-85 with i-stop, a standard D23L battery without. The Mazda6 is the model most often fitted with i-ELOOP, so we check the cluster and the battery label before quoting.
- Mazda CX-5
- The most common Mazda we attend. Petrol cars with i-stop use a Q-85; cars without it take a 75D23L class battery. Both sit on the left of the engine bay under a cover that unclips by hand.
- Mazda CX-9
- The 2.5 turbo seven-seater has a high electrical load and usually takes a Q-85 or a larger D26-case battery, depending on year. The older 3.7 V6 uses a conventional D26L.
- Mazda CX-3
- Takes a smaller B24-case battery than the CX-5. With i-stop that means an EFB in the same case, often labelled N-55, and without it usually an ordinary B24 battery such as 46B24L.
- Mazda CX-30
- Shares its electrics with the current Mazda3. Cars with i-stop take a Q-85, and the battery management reset after fitting is the same.
- Mazda CX-60
- Mazda's large rear-drive platform. Six-cylinder versions add a 48V mild-hybrid system beside the 12V battery, and the 12V battery position depends on the powertrain, so we confirm from the VIN.
- Mazda MX-5
- The roadster carries a small, light battery to save weight, and many are driven only at weekends. Long gaps between drives flatten it more often than age does.
- Mazda BT-50
- The pickup needs more cranking power than Mazda's cars, especially with the diesel engine. Expect a D26 or D31 case battery of 70 to 90Ah.

Mazda: common questions
Not answered here? Ask on WhatsApp. A person replies, at any hour.
What battery does a Mazda CX-5 take?
A CX-5 with i-stop takes a Q-85, an EFB battery in a D23 case. A CX-5 without i-stop usually takes a 75D23L. Both are under the bonnet on the left. Send a photo of your battery label on WhatsApp and we will confirm which one before coming to you.
Why is my Mazda i-stop light flashing after a new battery?
The car keeps a running record of battery charge, and disconnecting the battery leaves that record out of date. Until it is reset the amber i-stop light flashes. A scan tool reset clears it in minutes. If it returns, the battery fitted is probably not an idling-stop type.
Can I fit a normal battery in a Mazda with i-stop?
It will start the car, but it is the wrong part. A normal battery is not built for repeated restarts and partial charge. In practice i-stop stops working, the warning light comes on, and the battery wears out early in Dubai heat. Fit the Q-85 the car was designed for.
Do you replace Mazda CX-9 batteries at home in Dubai?
Yes. We deliver and fit the battery at your villa, tower or office car park, with free delivery and fitting. In Arjan and neighbouring communities arrival is usually 20 to 35 minutes. For other parts of Dubai we confirm the arrival time on WhatsApp before setting off.
How long does a Mazda battery last in the UAE?
Usually about 2 to 3 years. Heat does most of the damage, and short trips with the AC running do the rest. An MX-5 or a second car that sits for weeks may need one sooner. A battery test before summer tells you how much life is left.
