The short answer
Battery registration tells the car's battery monitoring system that a new battery has been fitted, so it resets its ageing data and charges correctly. Coding goes further and changes the stored capacity or type. BMW, MINI, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche, Land Rover, Volvo and many newer Ford and GM cars need it. Arjan Battery does it with a scan tool at your door in Arjan, Dubai.

Why a modern car has to be told
Older cars charge the battery at a fixed voltage and know nothing about it. Many newer cars have a sensor on the negative terminal that measures current, voltage and temperature. BMW calls it the IBS, for intelligent battery sensor, and has fitted it since about 2002. The car uses those readings to estimate the battery's charge and its age.
As a battery ages, the system adapts. It changes the charging strategy, limits start-stop and switches off comfort loads sooner to protect the next start. When a new battery goes in, those learned values are wrong. Registration clears them, so the car treats the battery as new and not as the worn one it replaced.
Registration, coding and reset are not the same thing
- Registration
- Telling the car that a new battery of the same type and capacity has been fitted. It resets the stored ageing data.
- Coding
- Changing the battery specification stored in the car, for example from 80Ah to 95Ah or from flooded to AGM.
- BMS reset
- The name Ford, Land Rover and some other makers use for the registration step on their battery monitoring system.
- Memory saver
- A small power supply that keeps the car's settings alive while the battery is out. It is separate from registration.
Which makes need it
- BMW and MINI
- Models with the IBS sensor, fitted from about 2002. Registration after every battery change
- Mercedes-Benz
- Most modern models monitor the battery, so the new one should be registered
- Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche
- Most modern models. The new battery's details are entered with a scan tool
- Land Rover and Range Rover
- Most modern models. BMS reset after fitting
- Volvo
- Most modern models, above all those with start-stop
- Newer Ford and GM
- Many newer models, including Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac, have a BMS that should be reset
- Ordinary Japanese and Korean cars
- Usually not needed. Some start-stop models are the exception
This varies by model and year. We check the car's details, the VIN or the registration card before setting off, and bring the scan tool when the car needs it.
What happens if registration is skipped
Nothing dramatic happens on the first day, which is why the step is so often left out. The effects build over months.
- The car keeps charging the new battery as if it were the old worn one, which can overcharge it and shorten its life.
- Start-stop may stay unavailable, because the car still believes the battery is weak.
- Comfort functions can be cut early with the engine off, such as the audio system or the cabin fan.
- A battery or energy-management warning can stay on the dash or return after a few days.
- If the new battery differs in capacity or type and is not coded, it is charged to the wrong profile.
How it is done at your door
- 1
Confirm the car before leaving
You send the make, model and year or the registration card on WhatsApp. We confirm the battery type, and the technician loads the right battery and scan tool.
- 2
Test first
Resting voltage, cranking performance and alternator output are measured. If the fitted battery is still good, we say so.
- 3
Connect the memory saver
Where the car allows it, a memory saver holds the radio, clock and window settings while the old battery comes out.
- 4
Fit the new battery
Correct size and technology, hold-down clamp tight, vent tube reconnected and the battery sensor plugged back on the negative terminal.
- 5
Register or code
The scan tool plugs into the diagnostic port under the dashboard. The technician registers the battery, or codes the new capacity and type if they have changed.
- 6
Check and hand over
The technician confirms the car has accepted the new battery, checks charging voltage with the engine running and takes the old battery for recycling.
Start-stop can take a few drives to come back
After registration the car still has to relearn the battery's state of charge. Many cars re-enable start-stop only after the car has been locked and left for some hours and then driven. This is normal and does not mean the registration failed.
The practical side in an Arjan basement
Most cars in Arjan are parked in tower basements and podium car parks, often with low headroom and weak mobile signal. Registration is done in the same visit as the battery change, where the car stands, so a BMW in a Vincitore Palacio basement or a Range Rover under DAMAC Westside does not have to be moved to a workshop first.
Before you go down to the car, send the building name, basement level and bay number on WhatsApp, since your phone may lose signal below ground. Arrival is usually 20 to 35 minutes in Arjan and neighbouring communities. Elsewhere in Dubai we confirm the time on WhatsApp or the call, 24 hours a day.
Car Battery Registration and Coding Explained: common questions
Not answered here? Ask on WhatsApp. A person replies, at any hour.
Does my car need battery registration?
If it is a BMW, MINI, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche, Land Rover or Volvo from the last decade or so, very likely yes. Many newer Ford and GM models need a BMS reset too. Most ordinary Japanese and Korean cars do not. Send us the model and year and we will confirm.
What happens if I don't register a new BMW battery?
The car goes on using the charging data it learned for the old battery. The new battery can be overcharged, start-stop may stay off and energy warnings can return. The car still drives, but the battery tends to wear out sooner than it should.
Can I register a car battery myself?
Yes, if you have a scan tool or app that supports the battery function for your make. A basic code reader does not. You need the new battery's capacity and type, and on some makes its part and serial numbers. Entering the wrong values is worse than doing nothing.
Is battery registration the same as coding?
No. Registration says a new battery of the same specification is in the car. Coding changes the specification the car holds, and is needed when the capacity or technology differs from the old battery, such as moving from EFB to AGM. Many jobs need registration only.
Will I lose my radio and window settings when the battery is changed?
Usually not. We connect a memory saver before the old battery comes out, which keeps the radio, clock and window settings where the car allows it. On a car that cannot take one, the clock and one-touch windows may need setting again, which takes a minute or two.
