Why a diesel is harder on its battery
A diesel has no spark plugs. It fires by squeezing air until it is hot enough to ignite fuel, so its compression is roughly double a petrol engine's and the starter has to work much harder to turn it. Before that, the glow plugs draw current to warm the cylinders. The battery does all of this before the alternator contributes anything.
Work use makes it worse. A D-MAX on site duty idles for long periods with the AC on, and at idle the alternator produces little spare current. Delivery routes mean dozens of starts with a few hundred metres between them. Add rough access roads that shake the battery in its tray, and about 2 to 3 years is a realistic life in the UAE.

Keeping a working Isuzu starting
- Wait for the glow plug light to go out before cranking. Cranking early wastes battery charge and makes a cold engine harder to fire.
- Check the hold-down clamp every service. A battery that can move on rough ground loses its plates to vibration.
- Keep terminals clean and tight. A thin layer of corrosion is enough to stop a diesel starter getting full current.
- Do not count on idling to recharge. After a jump start, the vehicle needs a proper drive or a charger.
- On a 24V truck, never power a 12V accessory from one battery of the pair. It unbalances them and ruins both.
Isuzu: Model by model
- Isuzu D-MAX
- Diesel pickups usually take an 80D26L or 95D31L class battery of 70 to 90Ah. Petrol versions can run a smaller D23 or D26. Terminal layout differs between years, so we check the fitted battery.
- Isuzu NPR
- Most NPR trucks here are 24V, using two 12V batteries in series in a box on the chassis. Both are replaced together with a matched pair, and a 12V jump from a car will not start it.
- Isuzu mu-X
- The seven-seat SUV shares its diesel engine and its battery with the D-MAX: one D26 or D31 class unit under the bonnet. Family use adds rear AC and screens to the load.
- Isuzu Trooper
- The older 4x4 takes a D26 or D31 class JIS battery depending on petrol or diesel engine. On a car this age we also check cable ends and earth straps, which corrode before the battery fails.
- Isuzu Pickup
- The earlier Isuzu pickups still working around Dubai take a simple D26 class battery. No electronics to reset, so a correct size and clean terminals are the whole job.

What battery does an Isuzu D-Max take?
Most diesel D-MAX pickups in the UAE take a JIS battery in the 80D26L or 95D31L class, about 70 to 90Ah, with a high cranking rating. Terminal side and case size vary by year and engine, so send a photo of the battery and we bring one that matches.
Is the Isuzu NPR 12V or 24V?
Most NPR trucks sold in the Gulf are 24V, made up of two 12V batteries connected in series. Some imported trucks are 12V with two batteries in parallel. Count the batteries and look at how the cables link them, or send us a photo and we will tell you.
Can you jump start an Isuzu NPR truck?
Yes, but only with a 24V supply. Tell us it is a 24V truck when you call, so the technician comes with the right equipment and we can confirm the arrival time. Do not try to start a 24V NPR from a 12V car: it will not turn the engine and can damage the car's electrics.
Why does my D-Max crank slowly in the morning?
A slow first crank that improves later in the day usually points to a battery losing capacity, corroded terminals or a poor earth strap. On a diesel the margin is small, so it gets worse quickly. A battery test with the cranking reading shows which one it is.
