What to know about the Model S battery
Before the 2021 refresh it uses a 12V sealed lead-acid battery behind the frunk trim, and on the earliest cars access takes longer. Refreshed cars use 16V lithium.

What the small battery does in an electric car
The high-voltage pack is isolated from the rest of the car until a set of heavy switches called contactors close. Those contactors, the door locks, the touchscreen and every control unit run from the low-voltage battery. A converter tops it up from the main pack while the car is awake. If the small battery cannot hold charge, the contactors never close and the car will not switch on.
