What to know about the Mustang battery

The battery monitoring system on newer Ford models
From about 2011, many Ford models carry a battery monitoring system, usually shortened to BMS. A sensor on the negative terminal measures the current flowing in and out, and the car keeps a running estimate of the battery's charge and age. When it decides the battery is weak it starts shedding loads, and the screen may show 'System off to save battery'.
The car does not notice by itself that a new battery has been fitted. Until the BMS is reset with a scan tool, it goes on charging and shedding loads as if the old battery were still there, and auto start-stop may stay off.
